In the 1980s, the U.S. Congress passed a series of laws that deny certain federal benefits to young men who failed to register for the draft. These laws affect federal student loans and grants, participation in federally-funded job training programs, and the holding of certain civil service jobs. State legislatures have also gotten into the act of punishing nonregistrants. Below is a summary of such state laws.
