| Hebrews, Letter to the, New Testament letter
traditionally attributed to Paul but now widely believed to be the work of a
Jewish Christian, perhaps one of Paul's associates. The letter was composed
sometime during the latter half of the 1st century. To judge from its
contents, the letter was addressed to a Christian community whose faith was
faltering because of strong Jewish influences. To fortify Christian beliefs,
the author describes the perfect priesthood of Christ, who, unlike the
Jewish high priest, offered but one sacrifice as God's own Son, thereby
redeeming all of mankind once and for all. The office of the Jewish high
priest, by contrast, was filled by a temporary appointee whose imperfect
sacrifice had to be repeated over and over. The author concludes that
Christianity is consequently superior to Judaism. The Christians are then
warned against apostasy and the "fearful prospect of judgment"
(10:27) that awaits "the man who has spurned the Son of God"
(10:29). They are urged to persevere in their faith following the heroic
example of others well known to them. The emphasis on Christ's priestly
mediation and statements on faith and the Mosaic Law are not typical of
other Pauline writings; other parts of the letter, however, clearly reflect
Pauline influences. |

전통적으로
바울이 쓴 것으로 여겨져왔으나 현재는
주로 바울의 동료인 듯한 유대계 그리스도교도의
작품으로 간주한다.
이 편지는 1세기 후반에 기록되었다.
편지의 내용으로 보아 수신인은 유대교의 강한 영향
때문에 신앙이 흔들리는 그리스도교 공동체였다.
그리스도교적인 믿음을 강화하기 위해 저자는 유대교의
대제사장과 달리 하느님의 아들로서 한 번의 제사로써
단번에 모든 인류를 구원한 그리스도의 완전한
제사장직을 설명한다.
이와 대조적으로 유대인의
대제사장직은 일시적으로 임명받은 자가 맡았고 그
불완전한 제사는 되풀이해 드려져야만 했다.
저자는
그리스도교가 결국 유대교보다 우월하다고 결론짓는다.
또한 저자는 그리스도교도들에게 배교자와 '하느님의
아들을 밟은 자'(10 : 29)에게 있을
'무서운 심판의 가능성'(10
: 27)을 경고한다.
그는 그들에게 잘 알려진 사람들의
영웅적인 모범을 따라 그들의 믿음을 끝까지 지켜나갈
것을 격려한다.
제사장으로서 그리스도의 중재와 믿음,
모세 율법에 대한 진술들은 전형적인 바울의 글들과
일치하지 않으나 편지의 다른 부분들은 확실하게 바울의 영향을 반영하고 있다.
